Date: 2010-10-13 08:02 pm (UTC)Firstly: does anyone have links to translations of the two extra chapters? I've got them in my Japanese copy of volume 23 but alas, I cannot read them.
Secondly, my first contribution to the PAR-TAY: Doujinshi scans! Well, inside looks, anyway. I put these up last year for HikaGo day <3 Part one, two and three.

Date: 2010-10-13 09:10 pm (UTC)I really loved the whole last arc with the Hokuto cup, although I can't believe it's really the end. I really enjoyed seeing Touya and Shindou finally on the same team, and I liked that the last storyline remained so fast and intense. I adore the drawing in this series: it's so beautiful!
The parenting was interesting here: Touya wants to move out to get away from his dad? I would have LOVED to see that explored more, as until now we just get a sense of how much Touya respects his dad. Touya's dad not bothering to talk to Touya after the game struck me as odd too, as we always get a sense of his interest in Touya before this, and while he seems to be fairly hard on Touya when it comes to his Go, other characters say that he brags about Touya. I thought it was strange that there seemed to be this shift, and I would have liked to have read more about it. I also thought it was a shame that Shindou's mother just walked out! That was pretty terrible of her.
Otherwise I felt like a lot of the character arcs had reached a good point. They could probably have continued (and I would have loved that!) but I also felt a sense of conclusion, particulary in the Touya and Shindou relationship, and in the most important relationship of all, Shindou's relationship with Go.
I'm really glad I was able to read the last two comics, because I felt like they gave it an even better sense of completion. The arc with the two inseis discussing Shindou and Touya was really lovely, and I'm really glad it ended with Shindou and Touya about to embark on a match together: it gave it a lovely sense that their world was just going to continue.
I really liked that they mentioned Sai right up to the end too <3

I liked the presance of his father and his teacher, both with an opposite oppinion on the worth of being a Go pro.
I liked Touya's dad showing up.
And the mentions of Shuusaku (and by assosiation Sai)
And then actual talk of Sai (squee!!!)
more comming...
Re: Vol 23
Date: 2010-10-13 08:26 pm (UTC)I wonder why they brought him in at the end like this? I mean, I like it and I like him, but they could have easily used a preexisting character in the Hokuto Cup.
I *loved* Touya-sensei showing up, and they way the conversation swung around to Sai - it was a good way to keep Sai there until the very end. He was not forgotten!

Date: 2010-10-13 08:30 pm (UTC)The mother site has many of the games in the same format, but is in Japanese.
Favorite moment: when Yongha agrees with Shindou on why they play Go, but asks Suyon not to translate (he wants to stay the ‘bad guy’, doesn’t he?)
Take a look at Touya’s face as well (he too understands what’s been said).
Poor show on the parenting front: After Shindou’s Mum who left half way through, now Yashiro’s Dad who doesn’t even take a look at the games and Touya Kouyou who leaves without even seeing Akira – though I did like his psychology of Akira’s playing to win, and Aikawa, who, in ignorance of Kouyou’s celebrity, decides it must be okay to let him into the viewing room seeing as he’s Touya Akira’s Dad.
I read a rumour that the ending to the Hokuto cup arc got changed at the last moment because of a problem with a living Go player who thought they had been depicted in the Manga. Does anyone know anything more about this?
In the edition I read (Tonkam) there is an extra part at the end of this volume, after the Hokuto cup. It includes the start of the young lion’s tournament and has a wholly different feel: we see Hikaru from the outside, as if from a distance. I liked that this ended mid-game – it left me with the feeling that all must continue.
This final part also introduced two rival insei: Oka and Shouji. Due, I think to an error in translation, Oka was thought to be female for a long while, though recently confirmed to be male. Nevertheless, I think the mistake has led a greater amount of fanfics to be written featuring Oka than would have been without the error – the fandom welcomed another female character.

I don't think there is any plot left for a mainstream sequel; not the way they've set the parameters of their stories. As long as they don't go into the personal lives of the characters, which they really haven't, it's just more glares between players at tournaments. A bit like Vol 18.
Now that they've milked the Sai/Shuusaku angle dry there's just the normal day to day Go world left.
FANFIC
Date: 2010-10-13 08:47 pm (UTC)Possibly this is because I focused pretty hard on Hikaru/Akira.
Anyway, linkage:
* Issues by Mirabella - there's a line in here that's my favorite line in fanfic, full stop. I always catch myself thinking about it at random moments.
