effex: Working now (Working now)
I don't rec fanfic here much anymore (that's what delicious is for) but I finished reading two Avatar AUs over the weekend and folks, I am excite.

Huh. It turns out they're by the same person, I only just realized. Well.

Imagine the Ocean by Damkianna: Hakoda found the boy in the ice eight days before Kya went into labor. A 100,000+ word rewrite of Book One, with Katara as the Avatar. Amazing. Wonderful use of female characters, both canon and OC. Wonderful expansion of the Avatar world. Wonderful, wonderful look at Katara, growing up and growing into her role as Avatar. (Note: Yes, Aang's dead and it's sometimes hard to handle. Yes, he still plays a major part in the story.) In short: wonderful.

Big Damn Heroes by Damkianna: Katara pushes past the curtains that block off the bridge - they have got to get a new door fitted - and stops behind Toph's chair. "I take it we didn't drop out of hyperspace on purpose," she says. (Aka THE GAANG IN SPACE.) That last part is all you really need to know. GAANG! IN SPACE! It's not quite a crossover with Firefly, more Firefly flavored (or as the notes say, '"Firefly, but with Asians!" ... and Inuit, of course.'). I want a million more stories in this 'verse. Hell, can we swap just it for Firefly?

And now, the first half of my responses to the 15 'ships meme:

The Pairings )

[personal profile] pseudo_tsuga:

2, 3, and 7 get stranded on a desert island. Who makes fire? Who finds food? Who stubbornly refuses to do anything beside prepare for rescue? )

3 have to collaborate on a school project. Do they get it done or just make out all the time? )

1 and 10 are babysitting. What horrors unfold? )

[personal profile] zanzando:

7 & 12 meet the Doctor (whichever incarnation you like) while he's on a much needed vacation. Naturally, they must team up and save the world (probably not Earth) from certain destruction! )

Happy 2011!

Happy (Gregorian) New Year's, folks! 2010 out, 2011 is in, and I am glad. It's been an intense year.

Also, Yuletide author reveals are up! I wrote Idiots are always moving forward, a Hayate x Blade fic for Sumiregawa. There's femslash (Sae/Akira, hints of others), Takarazuka references, dancing, plotting, and general shenanigans! I had a blast writing it (when I wasn't tearing out my hair).

And while we're talking fic, let's do that meme. In 2010, I wrote:

* Untitled Arhur/Eames drabble (Inception)

* Idiots are always moving forward (Hayate x Blade)

* Untitled Yusuf/Saito drabble (Inception)

* The Coffeehouse Crossover Confrontation (Middleman/Losers)

* Masks, Robots, Coffee (A ZapBamPow Exclusive Interview) (Sky High)

For a total of...9,575 words. A personal finished, posted, non-original fic best!

I put serious thought into writing another 500 words of something last night, after posting that second Inception drabble. Get my word count up to 10,000 just in time for the new year. I decided to play Mirror's Edge and watch Castle with my family instead. I don't regret it :D Besides, 10,000 words makes a great goal for 2011.

Other things I want to do in the new year. )

Like I said up top, 2010 was a hard year. My grandparents are doing badly, my job's exploitative, and I've struggled a lot with anxiety and depression. BUT.

It's also been a good year. My family and friends have been spared the worst of the financial crisis, I've got a job to complain about, I got a second awesome roommate, I learned a shit ton about social justice issues, I've been more active in fandom than I've ever been before.

There was a lot of good in 2010, and I'm glad of it. It's finally fucking over and I'm glad of that, too.

I did some archive hopping, trawled other people's rec lists, and finally settled on systematically working my way up from Z (I'm currently in S!), so this first set is a bit of a grab bag:

History of Film (Community, gen/bob): "Awesome," Jeff says. "Listen, Troy, you can stay here and worry about how gay you might look in those chaps, or you can come watch a man – maybe two – take a pie to the face. I know which one I'm going to do." || For me! So nice I've recced it twice.

Special Seminar in Romantic Comedy (Community, Troy/Abed): Abed realized he loved Troy when the two of them were standing in Shirley's kitchen. He was placing a precise line of candies across the top of a cupcake when it occurred to him that they were decorating six dozen of those cupcakes for a bake sale, to raise funds for a purpose that defied easy explanation, which was why Annie was in the next room making posters that lied about it.

Halves and Holes (Final Fantasy 6, Terra/Shadow): She could tell the exact minute the magic had left her, its last life-throes, because her body would relax – but there was no release in it; it was the softening of defeat, a dull ache of loss, and Terra would lie in bed with her muscles throbbing an awkward symphony and stare at the ceiling. || I'm not sure I can coherently express how much I love this fic. FF6 is one of my oldest and most beloved canons and this story does it justice - magic has left the world and everything (and everyone) is a little broken, but that doesn't stop them from moving forward. Amazing world-building, amazing characterizations, and *long* (27,000 words long).

Wizards in Winter (Birds of Prey (DCU)/Young Wizards, gen): It was a simple assignment--clean a lake of toxic sludge. But when Kit & Nita decided to try a more 'creative' solution, they ended up chasing a garbage-eating alien through an impossible town, with the help of some rather unusual new friends. || I didn't know I wanted this crossover until I got it.

Four Seasons (Oglaf, Lesbian Mercenary/Snow Queen): “Really.” Oyun sighed. It just wasn't working. “Look, drop the shape. Do the one you had before. The hot fiscal one. No - not the moneybag head! A real head! A human head, Aron!” || Glee, glee everywhere - the hot lesbian mercenary and the snow queen are my two favorite Oglaf characters and this is an excellent continuation of their stories. Plus world-building! And a surprise crossover near the end!

Love Like a Cannonball (Sky High, Will/Warren): Being a superhero is harder on some days than others. Being a superhero in love with your best friend never gets easier. A series of scenes in the progression of Will and Warren's relationship.

Tales of the Bathhouse (Spirited Away, gen): Three stories of the bathhouse and its inhabitants. Gorgeous, gorgeous expansion of canon.

Like A Fairytale With Combat Boots (The Losers, Cougar/Jensen): the one where Jensen plays Sleeping Beauty, Pooch bakes, and everyone totally doesn't panic.

Moil and the Man: Sixty-Three Ways to be Heard Over the High King of Hoovers (Un Lun Dun, gen): Revolution seemed pretty easy sometimes, compared to all the work that came after. || Extreme bookaneering is my favorite forever.

Rasa (Un Lun Dun/Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Deeba/Haroun): See, here, there was a city — 1100 years ago they had baths and street lights and tooth paste. It was Islamic Spain then, and people went to Baghdad and they had libraries and factories and a port and markets. But it fell apart. Got sacked and burned. And the abcity's been getting smaller for 900 years, but it's still been here. || The language and imagery here is lovely and perfect for both canons.

Grandpa (Up, gen/bob): "I was wondering if I could call you Grandpa. It's okay if I can't. It's just, both my grandpas that I already have are dead, and I sort of think of you like one and you show me stuff and you let me come over and you help me with my homework and you know everything and--"

Relative Terms (or, Not Exactly Christmas Elves) (Young Avengers, Billy/Teddy): It started, like a lot of things, with Teddy being the best boyfriend ever.

Yay!

I have a fic! It's amazing!

History of Film - Community, gen with a hint of Troy/Abed, full of hijinks and genre references and witty one liners and sheer fantasticness.

And now I'm off to Christmas Dinner, hope y'all are having a great holiday and/or weekend!

Hey, it's my birthday!

And it comes in the middle of a busy couple of weeks, let me tell you:

* I finished my Captain America/Ironman Reverse Big Bang illustration! It's biosex!swapped, gen, and includes Storm, because that's how I roll.

* I finished the first finished draft of my [community profile] intoabar fic and sent it off to my betas. It's 'Wendy Watson (Middleman) walks into a bar coffeeshop and meets Jolene (Losers)' and hopefully awesome, look for it to go up Friday.

* I made a bunch of Janelle Monáe icons, if you missed them they are back thataway.

* I had a job interview today! It went well, please sweet universe let me get it. I am so done with my current one.

* WORK, ARG.

* I leave for San Francisco (well, Berkeley) on Saturday. I haven't been back to California since '06 (and haven't had a decent vacation in two years), this is going to be amazing.

* Your mostly-regularly scheduled linkspam will resume tomorrow. I was going to do it tonight, but then masala chicken and Blood Ties (the show) happened so, you know. Not so much. I should reread those books.

* But I do have a link! If you haven't read [personal profile] toft's The Origin of the Phrase (Yusuf/Saito) you should go do it now, it is perfection.

* It's also [personal profile] nepenthe's birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, B!

Back to School our busiest and most stressful period at work and this year is particularly bad - we're understaffed, multiple inventory shipments are delayed, we just had a major management change, the weather is out of whack and the AC is on the fritz. Today has been especially shit.

I really want a long, actiony, slightly schmoopy Losers fic. Or long, actiony, slightly schmoopy Sanctuary (where is my epic Henry/Bigfoot at Comic Con fic?) or Femslash Of Any Fandom fic.

Alas, I do not have any of these though I could probably find the first and third if I looked hard enough.... But that's okay, I've got favorites to fall back on. Let me tell you about them (also, making lists is soothing).

Diplomatic Relations (Naruto, Lee/Gaara) by [livejournal.com profile] maldoror_gw: The one where Lee is a terrible diplomat but a good (boy)friend.

Twice Shy (Star Trek Reboot, Bones/Kirk) by [livejournal.com profile] sarkasticfics: The one where Bones is a werewolf and Jim is his mate. Werewolves IN SPACE.

The first eight don't count (The Losers, Cougar/Jensen) by [livejournal.com profile] storm_petrel: The one where Jensen is a were(house)cat.

The Doctor and Mr. Jones (Torchwood, Jack/Ianto) by [personal profile] copperbadge: The one (no, the other one) where Ianto is a Time Lord.

Juggling Act (due South, RayK/Frasier) by [profile] cesperenza: The one where they go undercover at the circus.

Resurrection, Reconstruction, and Redemption (The Avengers, Steve/Tony) by [personal profile] elspethdixon and [personal profile] seanchai: The one where Steve is brought back to life and (almost) everything goes to shit all at once.

Moving On (Smallville+DCU, Clark/Lex) by [personal profile] astolat: The one where Lex conquers the galaxy in style.

Near Miss (The Dresden Files, Harry/John) by binz and shiplizard: The one where Marcone is a mechanic.

Man I Used to Be (Leverage, Alec/Eliot) by [livejournal.com profile] jendavis: The one where Eliot gets kidnapped. (links to epilogue)

Skipping a couple SG:A, Merlin, Smallville, Sentinel, AI RPS and Harry Potter fics because I am lazy and there are already an awful lot of white dudes on this list.

How about you? What are your favorite long, actiony, slightly schmoopy fics?
