The Totally Epic HikaGo Reread - Vol. 2
May. 19th, 2010 12:02 pm
It's Wednesday again, which means it's time for:
~Volume 2 of Hikaru no Go~
There's a lot happening in this chapter - new characters, tournaments, new schools, and conspiracies in the rain - what was your favorite part?

Date: 2010-05-19 05:08 pm (UTC)* Oh, Akira, you and your complete inability to relate to your peer group. And your stalker tendencies. And your clothes - it all adds up, I think, to a decent depiction of life as a child prodigy.
* Akira's (very polite, very confused) stalking - and Hikaru shutting the window (and curtains, ha!) on him - is definitely my favorite part.
* Not so much the bullying (though realistic). We can't win on an even playing field, let's tie him up and make him play that way! That'll prove we're better then him!

Loads of character devolepment for Akira, like that, but less CD for Hikaru...
I'm with Sai on Hikaru's prejuctice against Akari playing; is a bit much, I think...

Date: 2010-05-20 06:50 am (UTC)Oh, some of the panels are so, so beautiful. I'd always thought of myself as liking the anime more, having read the manga admittedly very spottily, but I can feel that changing a little and my love for the manga matching that for the anime. The colors in the animation are so beautiful (and music and voices and etc), but some of the manga panels are so well executed that they don't need anything more. Either way, my chest feels tight whenever I take it in, even with all the moments of sheer peace and beauty. There's so much movement in this series, even with its overarching serenity -- it's hard to describe, I don't know, I'm half babbling here. *_*

Date: 2010-05-22 01:35 am (UTC)To be honest, I haven't read the manga cover to cover before. I only read what I needed to fill in the blanks. (I owned some of the translated manga... it was terrible.)
I keep hoping one day, I'll get to buy it from the Kinokuniya in Japan Town...
I have seen the anime more times than I can count, but recently, I've grown a huge appetite for manga - gotta catch up to everyone here in my Hikago reading!

Date: 2010-05-24 08:02 am (UTC)I've forgotten how borderline-chauvinistic Hikaru is, and how much that bothered me. I say borderline because I understand the cooties bit, but when he says that "basically girls who play go are presumptuous" (not sure if I understood that sentence right), that's clearly talking about more than Akari. I can't remember how he treated the female insei, though... If I remember right they essentially weren't on his radar.
Tiny-ass furigana during the Heian flashback are tiny...
Oh, that part where Hikaru's in the bookstore talking about why he shouldn't buy a beginners' book for Akari? Why is he psychically talking with Sai with his mouth wide open?
Alright, that's enough. Bed time. ^^;
