Akira seems to playing the same record over and over, and not getting anywhere. I'm starting to think it's bad writing at this point, like Akira's been put on hold until his, hopefully at some point, game with Hikaru.
I agree re: Akira - he seems stuck in a holding pattern. Even if he's been doing his best not to think about it, he must have formed *some* conclusions... but we're not really eeing much of him outside his relationship with Hikaru, maybe he's doing most of his growth in other areas.
There is the discussion of the Sai-Meijin game with Sai himself fading into the background which is very sad, even though the game itself enters go history.

From another point of view I wonder whether living players had the right to refuse their games being used in this way. Cool enough it you get chosen to have your game played by Touya Kouya, but what about if you got Daké (Mitani's Go salon) or Goseki (fake gobans)?
To me, Kurata is like Ogata's opposite. Physically, its clear but they are also opposites in attitude. Kurata lacks a single grain of sophistication, or aspiration to it, but instead appears incredibly straightforward. What appears initially as arrogance later reveals itself to be a kind of child-like blind faith in his own abilities, which, accurate or not, carries him along.
Here, he also provides insight on Touya Kouyo’s change in playing style and is the latest character to find himself in the role of 'gobetween' between Shindou and Touya.
Ogata says his line I remember the best. Its something like ‘Nothing is more fun than go’. I think Sai would agree.
Also here, why is it, with the same scene and characters in virtually the same images, the manga made me think that this lady was a casual girlfriend, while the same scene in the anime made me feel sure that money had changed hands?!
Oh, I forgot to add - I really love how happy Touya Senior is in his retirement. Between that and the game with Sai, he seems a much happier, looser person.

Of course, unfortunately I can no longer link to the scantilated manga for comparison.
I wholeheartedly support the initiative of Onemanga in removing licenced manga - especially if this means Viz will finish officially publishing the series in English - its just a bit inconvienient for pointing out little things like this in an internet-friendly way.
Yes it's nine months after the pro exam. In a boys life that's a long time. It seems in the manga & anime they are very precise about times of year, and growth of characters. An anime I've years and years ago was also about a young boy growing up. In that one he wandered about Europe for some years, so the change of seasons was more noticable in that one, but it's here too.
My guess is that they jumped because of the practicalities of animation. I think for an anime they have 10+ animators (a number totally pulled out of my butt), but for the manga it's probably only Obata drawing Hikaru and Akira, allowing him to make more subtle adjustments.
- Sai's space suit! - I may be imagining it, but it seems like we're seeing more and more shots of Hikaru without Sai lately. I don't know how much of it is simply foreshadowing (not that that isn't being laid on as thick as molasses), but I wonder if they're also trying to show us how Hikaru's not really needing Sai anymore, now that he has pros to play and learn from. - Amused at the number of shots of Kurata talking while he has food in his mouth. - Is Hikaru portrayed as his 6th grade self in that safari shot? - Hikaru's present but absent dad... I guess there's no real reason to mention this again, but I will anyway: I find it hard to believe that that's pure laziness on Obata's part. - Poor Waya... Could Shigeko be any less subtle about wanting to marry him?
I actually think the missing dad is a running gag.
I'm strongly suspecting Obata was getting a little bored of drawing the ordinary world of HnG. Hence the interesting illustrations.
I have also noticed that Sai was not shown in scenes he was at. Maybe because he had nothing to say. At the moment he can't really help Hikaru any more; he's taught him all he had to teach. So that leaves Sai's angsting thoughts of the future he hasn't got, and they've put as much as they could in without over doing it.
'Poor Waya' my grandmother. That boy can take a bit of wheeling, he's good enough at dishing it out. All in fun of course!
Ah-ha, the 'bonus chapter'. I forgot that. We obviously differ in interpretation of Shigeko's intentions. I thought it was really funny and wrote a ficlet about it for blind go". I suppose she could easily be hinting though (and they certainly look like they might be a couple in the single picture from this story that appears in one of the anime outros).
As for Kurata, he does come over as rather gross. But is speaking with your mouth full considered rude in Japan?

Date: 2010-08-14 02:03 am (UTC)- I may be imagining it, but it seems like we're seeing more and more shots of Hikaru without Sai lately. I don't know how much of it is simply foreshadowing (not that that isn't being laid on as thick as molasses), but I wonder if they're also trying to show us how Hikaru's not really needing Sai anymore, now that he has pros to play and learn from.
- Amused at the number of shots of Kurata talking while he has food in his mouth.
- Is Hikaru portrayed as his 6th grade self in that safari shot?
- Hikaru's present but absent dad... I guess there's no real reason to mention this again, but I will anyway: I find it hard to believe that that's pure laziness on Obata's part.
- Poor Waya... Could Shigeko be any less subtle about wanting to marry him?

Date: 2010-08-14 08:48 am (UTC)I'm strongly suspecting Obata was getting a little bored of drawing the ordinary world of HnG. Hence the interesting illustrations.
I have also noticed that Sai was not shown in scenes he was at. Maybe because he had nothing to say. At the moment he can't really help Hikaru any more; he's taught him all he had to teach. So that leaves Sai's angsting thoughts of the future he hasn't got, and they've put as much as they could in without over doing it.
'Poor Waya' my grandmother. That boy can take a bit of wheeling, he's good enough at dishing it out. All in fun of course!
