I think it's because he's so self-focused. He wonders aloud to Isumi and doesn't really consider what he's doing there.

When it comes to psychological strength in a competition, the difference between 12 and 18 is not very big. Frankly I was more stable at 12 than at 16, though it went back up around 17 to 18.
I've seen two 13-year-olds completely psych out the entire rest of the competition, even though in that instance they weren't even in competition with those of a different age.

That's because they didn't really understand their own behaviour and it's effect on others. By age 18 you do (hopefully anyway).

No I meant effect as in hurt caused, that you really should not, etc.
Kids at 13 don't have the empathy that 18+ have.
Basicaly they are little self-centered monsters. Just old enough to manipulate effectively; too young to know you just can't do that sort of thing to someone.
Some people will teach them the hard way, usually fellow 13 year olds, by doing it right back at them.

I'm so glad I'm not a kid anymore!

I think he may be so self-absorbed and, frankly, cold-hearted, that even if he knew what effect his words were having, he probably wouldn't give a damn. Like, not that he'd intentionally do it more, but that he'd decide that's their weakness for getting psyched out. Survival of the fittest and all that.
