effex: default (I play with dolls)

Seldom-mentioned factoid - I play with dolls. Ball-jointed dolls (also action figures, but that's another post). Wonderful, fantastic, occasionally creepy, awesome dolls. I usually confine my squee to my family (half of whom have converted, half of whom think we're out of our minds) and Den of Angels, but. I was twittering this morning when I got news - the head I had sent off to an artist to be painted was finished, and she looked spectacular (see Dee below). So I tweeted about it and [personal profile] zanzando expressed an interest, thus smudging the lines between fandom and doll!fandom (which were, honestly, already pretty smudged - I do have dolls based off of comic book and video game characters) forever. Brace yourself!

It's time to meet the resin.

Daniel (Bobobie Apollo):

This is Daniel, resin-y joy of my life. He's the mold that I fell in love with, way back when, and my first doll (surprise!). He's a femme little thing - the Bobobie body's slender and light, his hair's messy and a bit girly, and he loves him some pastels. As we speak, he's sitting next to me on the couch, wearing jeans and a sparkly pink/purple shirt with slashes in it. Mom bought it for him, he loves it.

I'm lazy, so from his DOA database entry: Quiet and thoughtful; Daniel's not much one for social interaction or excitement - he prefers staying at home, reading or writing. He enjoys storytelling best of all things and, if dragged out to a meet or a party, can often be found weaving elaborate tales for children in some secluded corner. His reserve is often taken for shyness, a mistake - he's actually quite blunt (and often rude) when talking with others.

Eleanor (Resinsoul Mei):

Photobucket

Eleanor is Daniel's (half?) sister. You can't tell in the photo, but she's an elf and also tiny, which makes their family history... interesting (other three dolls in that photo belong to my mom). I'm still trying to work it out. I affectionately call her hair Eater of Worlds (I tamed the heck out of it for this photo).

From her database entry: Eleanor tends towards the quiet and withdrawn until something sparks her interest (or her temper) - like flipping a switch, she'll go from dreamy to assertive, argumentative, or spoiling for a fight in a matter of seconds. Likes: Theater, film-making, wide open spaces, sharp pointy objects. Dislikes: Boring clothes, coffee, wasted potential.

Cirrus (DiM Minimee: Cloud Strife):

Photobucket

Minimees are not-particularly-official limited edition heads created on commission by Doll in Mind. And yes, that's FF7's Cloud. He's still pretty rough, concept-wise - needs a new faceup, needs a body, needs a wardrobe.

I'm leaning towards bitchy glam-rocker, though - kinda like if Cloud had stuck with the whole crossdressing thing and had channeled his emo into nightly performances at Tifa's bar. Definitely the (unwilling) 'mother' of the group and best friends/rivals with Dee. The 'mother' bit will be particularly hilarious when I get the Littlefees I'm planning on (to be mini versions of Blue Beetle II and Booster Gold, hell yeah).

Dee (DiM Minimee: Death of the Endless):

Photobucket

Oh, Dee. Another Minimee, based on Death from Sandman - I asked ShallowSleep to give her an amused, smoky, indie rocker vibe and boy but did she deliver. Also bodyless (and wigless/wardrobeless).

I see her as a moderately successful recording artist (she's in a band with one of Mom's dolls, shush, we have this all planned out), talented, serene (most of the time), and self confident. Queer (okay, they're all queer) but willing to play it straight above the waist, particularly with pretty young men. Constantly in fights with Cirrus over music (seriously, apart they're both pretty mature, but together they can be like a couple of five year olds).

Honestly, this isn't a hobby I ever expected to see myself in and I know it can look as strange as hell to outsiders (you do what/talk about them *how*). But for me, it's like... some of my favorite authors talk about the harem stable of characters that live in their heads, see, and the dolls are that for me - inner voices that I project onto pretty pieces of resin. I think it's that way for most of us in the hobby, actually. /rambling

This would be slightly less weird if I didn't know I'll be formally introducted in a week's time.
