Movie Rec: Attack the Block

My friend D emailed me this afternoon to say she had advance screening passes to Attack The Block, did I want to come? I'd seen the awesome poster for it at Comic Con so I said yes. Hell yes.

Folks, it was fucking fantastic. Our heroes are South London kids, estate kids, kids of color! The acting's amazing! The movie's gorgeous! It's all live action, no CGI! Which doesn't stop the aliens from being terrifying (good storytelling/cinematography beats fancy graphics, who knew)!

And along with the tight storytelling and great writing and scary monsters and weed jokes, we get commentary on being a poor kid in the estates. That no one's coming to help you, but that doesn't mean you have to lay down and die.

Attack the Block comes out Friday in the US, you should go see it!

This sounds really awesome! It looks like it's only going to be Limited Release in the U.S. for now, though, and it's not playing anywhere near me. Boo. D:

Well, shoot. I saw a poster at the theater (a mall theater, even, not an indie place) and assumed it was for general release. Here's hoping it does well and gets wider distribution!
