Saw this on my network and wanted to mention (re: your second eta) that the Red Cross is explicitly saying they'll earmark those donations for relief efforts related to this earthquake:
Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Your gift to the American Red Cross will support our disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific. On those rare occasions when donations exceed American Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters.
That's from the donation page you link; they're pretty reputable, so I doubt they'd fudge the truth. Not that it matters in any case -- I'm sure all donations will all do some good, right?
