So that was exciting
Jan. 1st, 2011 03:21 pmSo it's about noon, New Year's Day, and I'm at my parent's ranch with my siblings and my sister's boyfriend. Mom and Dad are in New Orleans for their anniversary. And this happened (I told Twitter first):
special_effex: Jesus fucking christ. You guys. YOU GUYS.
special_effex: The excitement we just had at the Effex household, you wouldn't believe.
special_effex: I just. My sister was coming up from the barn and these folks came down the driveway, told her a corgi had gotten hit up by the road.
special_effex: It was alive, but had a broken leg. Was it ours? (note: these people had TERRIBLE observation skills)
special_effex: All our dogs were accounted for, so Sister came inside and got me, we got some towels. Didn't wake up Brother or Sister's Boyfriend.
special_effex: Went out to road. One of our IDIOT DOGS got out and followed us, so I stayed with him while Sister searched one side of the road.
special_effex: Didn't see anything, switched places, I went down other side. Note: I do not have a jacket or a cell phone, because I am an idiot.
special_effex: Finally saw dog running in circles in the lower pasture. NOT a corgi, probably an Aussie. No broken legs, but hurt bad and confused.
special_effex: Our STUPID DOG breaks loose and goes after it, donkeys notice and go after it, Sister puts everyone away while I try to catch hurt dog.
special_effex: Note: Dog wasn't aggressive, just confused. Plan was to catch it, put it in a stall, and call someone to take it to Mom's vet clinic.
special_effex: We've done this before. Random animals are always showing up at the ranch.
special_effex: Anyway, I'm trying to catch it. Runs back towards road, I move to stand between it and cars. Sister follows with a lead rope, tries to catch
special_effex: Almost has it, then it freaks out and bites her hand. Pretty bad.
special_effex: And just...okay, to speed this up, I call Brother with Sister's cell, he takes Sister to ER. Call 911 when I can't get ahold of animal control, they send a guy
special_effex: I stand at side of road, sans jacket, for 30 minutes, watching as dog slowly... anyway. Dog was alive when they caught it.
special_effex: MEANWHILE, WHILE I'M STANDING THERE. A Great White Pyrenees randomly walks up the road, all 'hey, whatcha doing?'
special_effex: We had gotten a flier the night before, saying he was missing.
special_effex: I spend another 15 minutes frantically trying to keep him out of the street, waving down cars, trying to catch him.
special_effex: He lets me pet him a couple of times, but otherwise tough luck. Eventually runs away into a field, which is when animal control shows up
special_effex: So. Sister is at hospital, getting stitches. First dog is in quarantine. Second dog is... somewhere. Parents are coming home 2 days early.
special_effex: I'm staying here another day because someone needs to feed and generally be nearby.
special_effex: And my fingers are finally starting to thaw, thank fuck.
special_effex: @[redacted] It was just. What the hell? This is how we're starting the new year?
special_effex: @[redacted] The donkeys were ON TOP OF THINGS, okay, they were protecting the herd! So good job, even if it made things harder.
special_effex: @zanzando Life at the ranch is often strange. Strange involving animals! But this is pretty out there.
special_effex: @zanzando I saw that second GIANT WHITE DOG show up and shouted YOU'VE GOT TO BE FUCKING KIDDING ME, no lie.
EDIT: I should note that the animal control dude seemed like a decent guy and understood that the dog bit Sister because he was hurt/confused/freaked out, not because he was dangerous/aggressive. I'm confident the dog will be well treated. I really hope he recovers and they find his owners (he was wearing a collar). We're keeping an eye out for the second dog.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME is still my general mental state.

Date: 2011-01-01 10:21 pm (UTC)But yes! Thank you! I'll be online for another hour or so, I think -- I'm bussing it back to Boston at the moment, and we're currently in Worcester -- but I'd love to talk Community. I've been having to forcibly restrain myself.
