I think the writers were seriously searching for the 'new format' of the story now that Sai, as a plot device, is gone. They tried, and IMHO failed, to make the day to day existence of being a Go-pro interesting. It's a good thing they have the North Star cup on stand by...
I wonder what you'd make of the story if you arrived at this point without having seen the rest of the series before - pretty lost I imagine.
I much prefer the manga at this point. I think the art is great. Scenes that are so simple (and similar to ones we've seen so many times before: Hikaru at the goban, a hand going into the goke etc.) are beautifully done.
The music on the anime in these later, slower scenes sometimes cracks me up - its so OTT: close up of the board, cue big guitars!
There's been another major growth spurt (or age leap). Hikaru on the cover for example and the color spread just inside
I guess the side stores got published in between the chapters of vol 17 and this one. So afterwards it was - "hey they're all grown up"....Except they don't always behave like it:)
I see parts of the story made it to the credits that were never part of the anime itself
Do you think that Touya Kouya has Sai sussed? I mean has he worked out that Sai isn't a living person? I ask because I didn't come to this conclusion myself, but Ive seen it in fanfiction.
You get a lot of Kouya simply talking with people in this arc. Not the stuff you'd think Shonen manga is made of. That I think its part of the indulgence shown the writers after the sucess of the initial story.
I think he does not know one way or another. He's being really Zen about it: either Sai will ask to play him again or he won't. In the mean time Kouyo waits. Very Zen indeed.
