There was a long paragraph here about me being picky/cranky about movies. We're going to skip it! Except for this part: "
nepenthe would say 'Tank Girl' and 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' belong on this [bad movies that Effex likes] list. She would be wrong, wrong, wrong, because they are awesome." Because it is true.
Anyway! Monday night I watched Night at the Museum 2: Battle for the Smithsonian. It was terrible, and it filled me with glee. Glee.
Okay, to reiterate, NatM2 is not a good movie. History buffs, unless they are crazy like I am crazy, should not watch it. People who want well rounded and fleshed out characters should not watch it, ditto for cohesive, well paced plots. Race is handled... better then expected, but not particularly well. On one hand, Ahkmenrah is played by Rami Malek, who is of actual Egyptian descent and adorable. On the other, there's... the buffoonish, gibberish speaking Attila the Hun. Both movies are about men and men's journey's and male angst, but the women present are at least interesting (I know, I know).
At this point you are probably wondering, 'what the hell, Effex?'
But, see, these movies do two things for me. They appeal to my basest sense of humor - Giant Abraham Lincoln laying the smackdown on a bunch of 'ancient Egyptian' demon bird-things? Hysterical. Al Capone and Napoleon fighting like five-year-olds, Octavius on the squirrel, the bobble-headed Einsteins, Teddy Roosevelt/Sacagawea as a canon pairing, Ahkmenrah's resigned 'yes, it's just for decoration,' everything that came out of Hank Azaria's mouth? Hysterical. Also, I will watch Amy Adams in almost anything, and she was wonderful as Amelia Earhart.
And the world fascinates me. I want to talk about how creator intent and viewer expectation and the power of the tablet combine to create these people - who aren't human (or, okay, monkeys, etc), not really, but are growing and changing and becoming themselves regardless. I want to talk about the community they've created for themselves (and NatM2 robbed me of this), about their goals and what they want out of life and their philosopies and religions. I want to know if they're teaching each other, if they're learning and forming new ideas. I want to give them internet access. I want to see them fall in love (well, more. Teddy Roosevelt/Sacagawea is crack but interesting crack).
Because these people are going to live forever, or close to it. What are they going to do with it?
And, to be honest, I ship Octavius and Jedidiah like a mad shipping thing and I want a million stories about their friendship and romance and cross-cultural communication issues. And hijinks! It is always with the hijinks, with me.
And I want Amelia back, because she was amazing, and watching her negotiate a relationship with Larry would be interesting.
The response to all of this wanting is, of course, to write it myself (ain't nobody else gonna). I know ):
IN OTHER NEWS:
John Barrowman wants the Captain America role. The idea intrigues me, and also makes me cry with laughter.
Caught episode 2 of Leverage, finally, which was pretty sweet. Eliot was fantastic, I am in awe of Christian Kane all over again (HIS OWN STUNTS). Have some links - LEVERAGE #202 "The Tap out Job" Post-game @ Kung Fu Monkey (aha, the folks talking about the Nebraskan inaccuracies reminded me eerily of my conversation with
cimorene about Iowa. Down to the butawesomeuniversity!!!111. Creepy.) and
dhobikikutti's My Big and Ranty Leverage Post.
ETA: This post took me an absurdly long time to write! I have now caught episode *3* of Leverage and it was also pretty sweet. I <3 my team.
Also saw 'Fast & Furious' last night (as opposed to 'The Fast & The Furious,' '2 Fast & 2 Furious,' or 'The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift.' What the hell, Universal Studios). Viewing inspired by a post someone (and I'll dig this up, I will, it's out there *somewhere*) made in which they suggested the fifth installment would be 'The Fast & The Furious: Dom and Brian Buy Curtains.' Which, yes. Yes they will. There's fic for this series, right?

Date: 2009-11-08 06:09 pm (UTC)ahahaha. I WANT TO WATCH PUMAMAN WITH YOU. possibly that is not the response to this post you were looking for, but dude. i somehow feel you are the only person i know who can appreciate my deep primal love for this movie.
Alice and Wonderland just walked into my coffeehouse. Complete with red bow and red stockings to go with her satin alice-blue dress with the white bow. PRETTY INTENSE.
Fast & the Furious has a tiny ongoing contingent of slash fans who adamantly insist that is the most slashy thing in the universe, and I have agreed adamantly with every one of them just from seeing the trailers for it over the years. (THE TRAILER FOR THE LAST ONE, THE LAST MOVIE? THAT WAS THE MOST BLATANTLY HOMOEROTIC MOVIE TRAILER I'VE EVER SEEN. GOD.) but this has never been enough to make me watch the movies themselves. though I almost picked up the trilogy at best buy a month or two ago, purely because i was thinking "MIGHT AS WELL GET A HEAD START ON YULETIDE CRAMMING." this is how my brain works all the time. :|

Date: 2009-11-09 05:05 pm (UTC)...that sounds pretty sweet. Real Life needs more absurdity.
I tracked down a bunch of fic right after making this post, it was pretty amazing. I'd been a while since I'd seen the original film; considering the last one in light of the first makes it *more* slashy, damn. And this is one of my very favorite 'lets just roll around in the slash' vids. Mmm, Papi. (Ooooh, she's made a White Collar vid.)
