effex: Why? (Why?)

JFC, Yahoo is shutting down Delicious. What. WHAT. WHAT.

I have 2700 bookmarks saved there right now, most of them (1613) fic. A lot of my fannish friends do too. And fannish comms. And challenges. And kink memes. And International Blogging Against Racism Week, and...

This isn't 'LJ's going under' levels of oshit, but it's still going to be bad - there really isn't anywhere (afaik) for people to go. A couple people (we're talking about this over on Twitter as I type) have mentioned Pinboard, which looks shiny, but that $7 sign-up fee's a big obstacle to fannish migration.

In conclusion, WHAT.

ETA: Both [personal profile] bookshop (DW/LJ) and [personal profile] copperbadge (DW/LJ) are hosting OMG WTF WHAT DO WE DO discussions.

Also, it turns out the AO3 can bookmark external links! Except there's no import and the interface is not-good. Maybe they can fix that?

ETA 2: Actually, everyone is hosting OMG WTF WHAT DO WE DO discussions. Via [personal profile] cimorene: 11 Ways to Backup your del.icio.us bookmarks. That's the first, most important step. Don't forget to do it!

ETA 3: The OTW just tweeted about the Delicious shut down and recommend the AO3, with a promise of more news to follow. So they know about it, at least!

Meanwhile, over at [livejournal.com profile] deliciouslymad, a former Delicious employee is talking about starting up a new fannish-friendly bookmarking service.

I have over 4,600 bookmarks, a lot of which are academically related. AUGH.

Migrating to my pre-existing Pinboard account as we speak.

Weeelll I've often thought about migrating to AO3 because, even though it doesn't work quite the same, there's always hope that it will in future. The full planned bookmark functionality isn't rolled out yet, as I understand it. The main problem is moving them there...

Yeah, when you go to Settings, you can export everything (including tags and notes) into an HTML file.

(Oh, and AO3 already allows bookmarking external works, right?)

Good question. Regarding the Delicious situation they'd probably whip something up.

I just have so many non-fannish things that I want to save, so I'll probably stick to Pinboard (especially since I already shelled out the equivalent of a Starbucks coffee for it).

I would love to use AO3 for bookmarks if it worked, but as of now, it's essentially useless because the bookmarks page does not have a sidebar. So you can bookmark to your heart's content, but you can't really access them once you've done so. It's just a long list of fics in the order you added them.

Gah, this is so horrible!

Fandom has really come to rely on delicious in so many ways (not just individual people's links, but think of all the kinkmemes and commentfic memes organised on delicious!). For my main account with my recs and reviews, I don't care as much, because everything is also on my journal. But my transfic master list... *cries* That is way too big to organise by hand anymore, so I definitely need something like that.

I hope so!

That applies to both external and internal bookmarks, btw. So even if you only bookmark fics already on AO3, it's not much use.

I use them only as a way of giving extra props to authors whose fics I like. If I like a fic enough to rec it, I'll click the "bookmark as a rec" button and give them a little heart. :)

Yikes. So glad my main bookmarking has been on Pinboard for a while now, but I can't imagine what people who use Delicious will do if they can't get in at Pinboard. I see the account fee for Pinboard going up precipitously in the near future-- apparently it goes up as the site gets to be more of a pain to host for the owner.

Bah. I really wish there was a solid alternative people could switch to. At least exporting wont be a problem...

Exactly. I do have hope that it will get useful in the future though. I know all the features planned for the site aren't finished yet. I'm hoping that at least if I have the backup of my old ones saved, if they later become more useful I might be able to import them there. :/

Yeah, I'm sure they will get to it eventually. It clearly just hasn't been a priority. Maybe this will bump it higher on the list for them, though.

Over here, a former delicious employee is talking about possibly creating a fandom version of delicious, which would be really awesome.

Saw that thread - and the idea that it would potentially integrate with AO3, too, would be a good thing if it could come about.

I just set up a pinboard account, and I've been testing out diigo for a while...I really hope a fan-run site gets up and running (or AO3's gets upgraded to support importing). :(

Have you set up o any of the alternative sites yet?

I can't do pinboard since I almost never have extra money to spare except just after Christmas and I usually save that for renewing DW and LJ. I really hate the system they have for determining price too. :/ Right now I'm just going to use Diigo because it's the closest I can get. This is such a spectacularly dumb move though simply because it doesn't cost much and so many people use it. They could at least sell it to someone; I'm sure there'd be buyers.
