I do like Nase. And I really enjoyed these side stories.
But most character don't get enough background in HnG. This of course becomes an asset in writing fanfic, because you can write your own character from scratch for some of them, but it does make consistent characterization impossible.
So It's hard for me to say who I like, since they are oftimes no more than a face that plays Go.....

True, the less we see of them the more blanks there are to fill in if you are writing about them - then its just a case of whether these match with what readers have filled into those same blanks (if anything) and to make it plausible.

I went on a lot about the Nase side story elsewhere, though one of the things I think I like most about it is that it illustrates the conflict between a 'normal' teenage social life and that of a Go student. I can't tell if they are suggesting that this would be worse for girls. Nase was also depicted during the insei days as looking for a balace in this way, trying to pursuade Isumi to go to the Karaoké if I remember rightly.

Yes, And I think she's the only girl who gets a volume cover all to herself!

I like a lot of the minor characters, they're part of the richness of Hikaru no Go.
Ashiwara, Kurata, Ichikawa, Hikaru's grandfather, Mitani's sister

But its not neceassily the most likeable that I like the most.

Nakamura (toad man), Akota (wig man) and Dake (the guy who's called in to deal with Mitani's cheating) are all rather grotesquely facinating. They're not real 'villans' - though Nakamura's getting close ^_^
