What am I reading, you ask?
As a public service for nepnthe an attempt at putting this journal to use (yes, again), I'll be posting recs for the fic/art/meta I read, as I read them. I won't be going back through my memories (there are over 200 stories saved in there, can not cope. Although if I find myself reading something again ((v. likely)) I'll probably do a post) so it'll be mostly new stuff. Fear not for your friends list, though, I'll be making just one post a week and adding to it.
Thursday/Friday: Sick, read lots of comics.
That's it for now!
Tuesday:
First off, I've dedicated the evening to rereading
ciceqi's Fullmetal Alchemist series, Altered States. The story's Roy/Ed, NC17 to PG and back again, plotty, and long. If you're a fan of the pairing and enjoy a ton of plot with your smut (or vice versa), I cannot recommend this series enough. It's technically unfinished, but you can find a large chunk of the fourth/final chapter here.
Otherwise, I've been on a bit of a meta kick, particularly of the fandom/gender/slasher variety. I'll post more about these three essays when it's not quite so late, but I'd like to point you towards:
Fandom and Male Privilege, by
cereta- it's two years old, but still the essay about what it means to create and maintain a female space.
Help! My slash goggles are stuck!, by
melannen- What it means to be a slasher, reading, writing, and looking at men who like men. A deeply thought inspiring discussion on the inversion of the male gaze.
Fandom as Queer Female Space, with a Bandom Digression, and Incidental Victorians -
kalpurna- More on female space, and what it means to be women writing for women. Edit: There's also a rebuttal by
mskatejthat's worth reading, as are the comments in said rebuttal (see this thread in particular).
Finally, if you haven't heard about the Organization for Transformative Works -
otw_news - or if you've yet to check them out at the source, I highly recommend you do so. They're in the process of setting up a non-profit organization (created by fans for fans) to champion and defend fan rights and fan activity. There's controversy (there always is, yeah?) about who exactly they represent, and why, but it's worth heading over and deciding for yourself.

Wednesday:
Ooh, this is a good one.
coffeeandinkhas compiled a list of Common and Hidden Knowledge - a collection of questions individuals ask the reader about their (the author's) particular culture. Basic, common knowledge inside said culture, mind you. Lots to learn!
Coffee Meta break!
bellatryshas posted a great (and lengthy) essay about the depiction of women in comics. And yes, it's all been said before (and yet, still true) - what make this stand out is that it touches on everything (T&A, improbable anatomy, porn face, the works), with a wide range of examples. Stay away from the outgoing links unless you have the time, there's a ton of information to be had here.

Saturday:
[Firefly] An Arrangement of Parts by Ana (Jayne/Simon). Summery: Against all odds, Simon and Jayne actually work well together. Post-Serenity, this fic's long, porny, and an interesting character study to boot.
I was conversing with a friend about the whole WBfiasco issue and was told, bless him, that he didn't see what the big deal was - if we wanted more female leads, we should have more female writers. I just finished putting together a bunch of links for him to consider and, not being one to waste a good link, I'm copying them here. Enjoy!
First off, a post from
tammy212that's directly relevant to the conversation (and sums up some of my feelings on the topic).
Next we'll hop over to The Hathor Legacy's opinion and, more importantly, it's follow up. Both are comments from women inside the industry.
Taking a slight detour, I point you towards the article ' Why aren't there more female CEOs?', which addresses the general issue of women in business.
Finally, The Male Privilege Checklist, which is both slightly unrelated and completely intertwined with everything we're talking about. You have the scroll towards the bottom of the page to read it - the White Privilege piece that precedes it is slightly *more* unrelated but recommended reading none the less.

Sunday:
[SG:A] The Ratio of Burning by
stillane (John/Rodney). Oh, but this was good. Really, really, really good. Rodney comes back damaged and no one is coping.
[SG:A] The machinery of heaven by
flambeau(John/Rodney). This is beautiful. The plot, the characterization, the writing. Especially the writing - torch writes so well and so vivid that you can feel it, taste it, smell it.
