thoughts on things and stuff

Michael Jackson and Captain Eo:

I'm not a particular MJ fan - I like his music, acknowledge his huge cultural significance, and always felt a little... sad whenever I saw him on the news, but I have/had no real emotional connection.

I did once, though. See, I grew up in Southern California - land of, among other things, a million different theme parks - including Disney Land. And in Disney Land was a theater showing the short 3D film Captain Eo. I *loved* Captain Eo - she was so cool! She had a spaceship, and a funky spacesuit, and a loyal crew, and saved the evil queen from herself with the power of song. All in 3D! I made my parents take me to see it every time we were at the Park (at least once a year).

And then, when I was... 12, maybe? I found out that Captain Eo was not, in fact, a girl. They shut down the attraction the same year.

So. Micheal, wherever you are, thank you for being the kick-ass heroine of my childhood. I hope things are better for you here on out you stop hurting - yourself, inside and out, as well as others.

Bonus! The Captain Eo film's up on Youtube: Part One | Part Two

Update: Sady over at Tiger Beatdown says some very important things about Michael Jackson, Celebrity, Empathy and the Culture of Silence.

Other Celebrity Deaths/fauxDeaths:

Farrah Fawcett also died yesterday, after a long struggle with cancer. I don't know much about her, aside from her stint in Charlie's Angels, and the Media isn't doing a damn thing to remedy that. Fail, Media, for not even mentioning her.

I'm relieved that Jeff Goldblum's not actually dead and very pissed at whoever was spreading the rumors (apparently about Zac Efron as well?) - seriously, what the hell.

Iran:

The conflict in Iran is still ongoing, is *getting worse,* and it's important to remember that in the midst of all the other hubbub. Our (US, at least) government *can't* do anything right now, but we as people can - at the very least we can pay attention when it's right in our face. I'm following @twistedchick and @IranElection09 on Twitter for most of my direct news a.t.m., previously linked blogs and news sources are also good.

And to ratchet down the formality for a second, this sucks. On many levels in many ways.

Warnings, as in Fic Warnings

Just, look. I'm strictly a reader (for the moment) and have no triggers of my own. But I understand that we need warnings in fandom, that the people with triggers are worth consideration, worth protection. Some reading (because *linking,* now that I do):

* Context, as provided by [personal profile] wistfuljane: On the responsibility of warnings

* From [livejournal.com profile] impertinence: Sexual Assault, Triggering, and Warnings: An Essay (Warning: Very explicit discussion of sexual assault and the nature, anatomy, cause & effect of triggers. Is itself triggery.)

* [livejournal.com profile] seperis: warnings, spoilers, and everything. The links in her post to posts by anonymous and [livejournal.com profile] shopfront are also must-reads.

* [livejournal.com profile] queenofhell: warning: wank

Tangentially, I don't have allergies, either. But I damn well check before I cook for someone and I always put a little ingredient list on stuff I'm giving away (christmas cookies for neighbors/busdrivers, valentine chocolates for coworkers, etc).

And that's enough of that, I think. Next up, 'Blue Beetle and Hayate Cross Blade are AWESOMEOMG.'
