The growing apart has always been so heartbreaking for me - it speaks to how self absorbed Hikaru is (in a normal, teenage way, I think) that he's failing to notice or appreciate this guy, his teacher, that he's with all the time. Some of it's got to be Hikaru building natural defenses (all. the. time.), but still.
