Fannish Things

I have seen Pacific Rim, which has all the giant robot vs giant monster action you could possibly want. Plus Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Mana Ashida (who plays a young Mako Mori and is absolutely amazing), and Burn Gorman (I regret his casting in a movie already too full of white dudes, but I did love him. ... I was going to add 'viva la Torchwood!', but the irony burned too much.)

Also saw White House Down (I was in the movie theater for a while) which was wonderful action schlock and Despicable Me 2, which, well. Had some entertaining bits, but mostly I resented the overwhelming, unnecessary heteronormativity, ugh. And! Lucy was at least a great character, but they had to go and fucking damsel her! And she didn't get to save herself, or Gru, or have any kind of moment of triumph! I was honestly expecting her to at least cut her way free from the ropes, come on. At least some of the minions got to be vaguely queer.

I've also, like most of Tumblr, been sucked into Welcome to Night Vale. I'm all caught up except for today's episode ("First Date", ahhhhhh, I am excited) and thoroughly enjoying its adorable, terrifying weirdness.

I didn't hit the fanfiction until I ran out of episodes (which, believe me, was a significant act of restraint) and fandom didn't disappoint - there's great stuff on the Ao3 (64 fics and rising!) and the kinkmeme. I'm bookmarking on my Pinboard as I go, but here are some of my favorites:

And then Carlos’s fingers flex, high on the khaki of Cecil’s thigh as he talks, something low and scientific, in that tone of wonder and joy that first stirred love in Cecil’s veins like a lumbering subterranean beast awaking at last and emerging into a strange, blinding new world.

Night Vale High has had a student exchange with its sister school, Hogwarts, for several centuries--longer, in fact, than Night Vale has had a high school or, technically, a population.

It has occurred to Carlos more than once that he might actually be dead.

You have pinned my hand to the slats of the picnic table like you'd pin a small desert bird, a Gila Woodpecker for example, or a Blood Thrush – across the narrowest part of the neck. Your fingers are very firm against my wrist. I am definitely blushing now.

"You seem solid to me, Cecil," you say, which is pretty gratifying, as statements you've made go. "But I've been cataloguing perceptional and temporal anomalies, and it's possible that given the general state of physics in Night Vale, I could be wrong."

Carlos is having the strangest dreams, and the strangest headaches, like there's something he's supposed to be remembering. Not to mention the intern's wedding coming up, and that new chemical StrexCorp wants him to develop. It's going to be a busy week.
